The Sammamish Trails Camporee is a special yearly event in the District where Patrols from our Troops can show their skill and pride, and share that with their District companions. The skills events are a series of challenges where all Patrols attempt to meet the same Standard Achievement. Camporee is not a competition between Patrols.
Events are designed to test the skills of Scouts and should be challenging to a First Class Scout. This means that younger scouts may find some aspects of the events difficult and may not achieve as highly as more experienced Scouts. However, there will be honorable mention across age ranges so that recognition occurs for all participants regardless of experience.
Camporee Scout Skill Events are based on Tenderfoot through First Class rank requirements and/or Merit Badge requirements. In 2011 these are: Pioneering, Orienteering, First Aid, Nature, and Camp Skills (knife, axe, fires).
Camporee Initiative Events are for fun and team-building and do not add to the Standard Achievement scores. In 2011 these are the Sammamish Stampede (an event-wide Scout Skills trivia relay race), and the Tomahawk Throw.
Scouts participate in the events as a Patrol unit using the Patrol Method. Led by their Patrol Leader, Patrols travel together throughout the day proceeding from event to event. Patrol Leaders are given their Rotation Schedule at the beginning of the day and they find their way to each event in the order described. All rotation start/stop times are signalled and all Patrols move on at the same time.
After the first event starts in the morning Scouts are not allowed to return to their campsite. Scouts must carry the essentials they need for the day as well as their lunch. At lunch break each Patrol eats at the most recently completed event location.
