Pioneering Event
The pioneering event challenges the scouts to construct a project using poles and ropes.  The patrols use their knowledge of knots and lashings to complete the project in the allotted time.

The event starts with each scout tying the knots for his rank.  Once each scout in a patrol has tied his knots the patrol proceeds to construction.

The seven basic scout knots are:

  • Bowline
  • Timber Hitch
  • Clove Hitch
  • Two Half Hitches
  • Taut-Line Hitch
  • Square Knot
  • Sheet Bend

For the construction part of the event the patrol is given a scenario that must be solved with a pioneering construction project.  The patrol is not told what to build, but the solution is left up to the scouts.  If the pioneering project solves the scenario then the patrol has completed the event.  Part of the judging includes the quality and variety of knots used in the construction.  The event can be completed with the knowledge of the first class knots and lashings.
